Isaiah 29:1 - 29:24

We learned in the previous 28th Isaiah Chapter a woe upon Ephraim. Ephraim represents the head of the ten tribes of the old northern kingdom of Israel, and its leaders were scornful and mocking the teaching of God's Word line by line. Because of their mocking The Word of God being taught and learned in such a way, It has become a stone of stumbling to them (1 Peter 2), and instead they make a pact with 'death' (Isa.28:13-16). God warned further, that their false covenant with death would be like a small blanket that gives no warmth of a full covering.
Today, Ephraim is represented by the western Christian nations where the majority of the scattered tribes of Israel migrated to (see the Lost Tribes study). So this warning is now for those among the western Christian nations. The Apostle Peter linked these warnings within this Isaiah Scripture, teaching those in Christ to desire the sincere milk of The Word (1 Peter 2:2). By heeding this warning upon Ephraim, God's people do not become "hasty fruit" (Isa.28:4).
This next Isaiah Chapter is a woe upon Jerusalem and the lion of the tribe of Judah (Ariel in Isa.29:1), as we ask a Word of Wisdom from our Heavenly Father, in Christ Jesus' Precious Name, Amen.

Isa 29:1    Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt! add ye year to year; let them kill sacrifices.

The "city where David dwelt" is Jerusalem, so this "Ariel", which means 'the lion of God' or 'lioness of God', is referring to the 'house of Judah' at Jerusalem (Strong's no. 740). The historical Message is that their animal sacrifices would not be accepted by God because of their falling away from The LORD. They fell away by making religious ritual more important than God's Commandment to execute righteous judgment between a man and his neighbor, and not oppressing the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow (see Jeremiah 7). For that, the killing of sacrifices would come to an end historically, and it was so. We are not to put our trust in an earthly Temple building assembled with man's hands, but instead we are to put our trust in GOD The Father and The Son. Therefore, this warning still holds true for today as the 'house of Judah' at Jerusalem is wanting to rebuild a third Temple, and bring back the killing of animal sacrifices.
For those in Christ Jesus, this should make us more aware that if we do not get into His Word to discover 'how' to make righteous judgments for the poor, the fatherless, and the widow, and how to live justly per His Word, then we cannot expect God to recognize religious ritual service to Him at our particular Church building.

Isa 29:2    Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto Me as Ariel.

Ariel (Jerusalem) was historically 'distressed' when Sennacherib, king of Assyria came upon Jerusalem during the reign of Hezekiah, the king of Judah (2 Kings 18). That was around 700 B.C., but... recall that the role the Assyrian played in history is also a 'type' for the antichrist in the latter days, as we learned from the previous Isaiah Chapters. Jerusalem was distressed again when Rome came upon the city.
There will be yet one more major distressing upon Jerusalem prior to our Lord Christ's return. Recall our Lord Christ's Message to His disciples in Matthew 24 when they remarked at the Temple building complex when our Lord was here upon the earth. Our Lord Jesus said, "...There shalt not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down." (Matt.24:2). In the very next Matthew 24 verse, Christ's disciples asked Him when those things shall be, linking it to the sign of His coming and the end of this world (age). That final distressing is covered here in Isaiah 29 also, and it is yet future to us.

Isa 29:3    And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.

This verse means that God is allowing Ariel (Jerusalem) to be sieged, historically, and yet in the near future. What do we hear about the return to Jerusalem today? We are told by many that God is gathering His People back to the Holy Land in the final kingdom sense. Don't be deceived, for the flesh time Jerusalem is going to be leveled by God to prepare for our Lord's "thousand years" Temple (Rev.20; Ezek.40-48). There's no room for a temple built by man's hand in Christ's thousand years future reign upon the earth. Therefore, it's important to realize that the gathering of the Jews to Jerusalem today and the plan to rebuild the Temple and re-institute animal sacrifice with the Old Covenant Levitical priesthood, is all for naught. God will allow them to be deceived by 'a pseudo messiah' who will come to sit in their temple, and whom they will proclaim as their king (Greek of Matt.24:24 & Mark13:22 with KJV phrase "false Christs"; also see 2 Thess.2). Jesus Christ is our only True KING, and we are to wait for Him (Rev.19:16).
If your Minister or Pastor is teaching about this gathering event to Jerusalem today, and the rebuilding of a third Temple as being a sign of Christ's coming, then that's correct, because our Lord Jesus is coming to destroy it with the "brightness of His coming"! (2 Thess.2:8). By that then, deception in false worship to the wrong messiah is guaranteed if you plan to be there for that event. The first one coming to sit in the temple in Jerusalem, will be the "son of perdition" (2 Thess.2:3-4). For believers on our Savior Jesus Christ who live in Jerusalem at that time, they might want to heed our Lord's warning of that future event, and get out of that area of Judea to flee to the mountains (Matt.24:16). If some think this event is already history and occurred in 69 A.D. with the Romans, then I implore you to keep studying on this matter from The Word.

Isa 29:4     And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.

Recall from Isaiah Chapters 2 & 8 about those who seek to idols and the counsel of sorcerers and soothsayers (enchanter, practitioner of magic). That's what many of the leaders of both the 'house of Judah' and the "house of Israel' (ten tribes) were heeding; and many from both 'houses' are still heeding that today. That old serpent (Satan; Rev.12:9) was doomed to the dust, and that false working is of him (see Ezek.8 for a close-up on those types of practices with both 'houses' of Israel being guilty; also Ezek.23). This is especially why Ariel (Jerusalem) is destined for a final destruction with the second coming of our LORD Jesus. Satan's children have about taken Ariel over, and prepare for their 'rock' to sit there in place of our Lord Jesus Christ The KING. If you're a believer on The ROCK, The Father through His Son, then are you sure you want to be there in Jerusalem for this coming destruction by The LORD?

Isa 29:5     Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.

Do you remember from 1 Thessalonians 5 that our Lord's coming will catch many off guard as a thief breaking in at night? -

1 Thes 5:2     For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3    For when they shall say, "Peace and safety"; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

What is it that the deceived will be saying just before our Lord's coming? "Peace and safety", that's what will be the saying of the day. In order for the majority of the world to actually say that and believe it, then much of the strife occurring in the world today must be subdued. That means this saying will occur when the final ten crowned "beast" system over all nations upon the earth finally comes to that "one hour" of its totalitarian world rule (Rev.13; Rev.17; Rev.9 for how long that 'one hour' is to be). Moreover, our Lord warned us what the times of wars mean, "And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet." (Matt.24:6). Simply then, as long as there is strife through wars going on in the world, then the time of our Lord's coming is not yet. But when we start hearing "Peace and safety" bellowed by the majority, because the one-world government beast system has finally come into its full reign, then... watch closely, for our Salvation in Christ Jesus is near. That's when this "multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff", and the destruction will come "at an instant suddenly".

Isa 29:6     Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.

The New Testament parallel to this verse is in Luke 21:11, Revelation 11:13-19, Revelation 16:18, and Hebrews 12:22-29. These signs of our Lord's coming are not upon His who love Him and keep His Word. God is a 'consuming fire', and for His, That Fire is the warmth of The Holy Spirit. Our Lord can be very accurate in judgment and correction, even as He brought fire down out of Heaven during Elijah's day, only burning up the sacrifice, the stone altar, and licking up the water that was in the trench around it (1 Kings 18:38-39).

Isa 29:7    And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.
8    It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.

When God's consuming fire melts all the wickedness off this earth, those who are responsible for distressing Jerusalem, within and without, will be like waking up from a nightmare. This alludes to our Lord's teaching through Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:51-52, when 'all' are 'changed' on the "last trump" (trumpet) in the "twinkling of an eye". That means as fast as you can blink. For those who fight against God, their souls will wake up and truly be hungry, spiritually. This also points to what Paul was teaching in 1 Corinthians 15 about the spiritual condition of the soul of some after Christ's return. After that change takes place, some will still have a "mortal" soul that can still be liable to die in the "lake of fire". That "lake of fire" event occurs later at the end our Lord Christ's "thousand years" reign on earth (1 Cor.15:53-54 with "mortal" in the Greek; Rev.20).
For those who stayed on Christ in His Word, and do their best to keep His Commandments, this judgment is going to be a good thing. His are not appointed to wrath, for they keep His Word of patience and wait upon Him, instead of falling away to worship the false 'rock' antichrist. For those who 'overcome' in Christ Jesus, there's is to eat from The Tree of Life in the midst of God's Paradise (Rev.2:7; 22:2; 22:14). That means Salvation through Christ Jesus The Savior.

Isa 29:9    Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.
10    For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath He covered.

That state of drunkenness is a spiritual 'stupor'. Our Lord Jesus and His Apostles taught of this, just as Isaiah saw God and also asked our Heavenly Father about it (Isa.6; Matt.13:11 forward; John 12:36-43; Acts 28; Romans 11). Our Lord Jesus revealed part of the reason for that spiritual blindness upon many with, "For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God." (John 12:43). In other words, they sought man's counsel for self-reward, instead of God's counsel for His Blessing.
When the apostle Paul was captive in his own house in Rome, he called unto the chief of the Jews concerning the reason for his appeal to Caesar. After declaring Christ Jesus to them out of the Books of the prophets and from the law of Moses, many of those Jews still refused to believe. Then Paul repeated this blindness Message recorded in Isaiah 6, and proclaimed that Salvation was thus sent unto the Gentiles, and that the Gentiles would hear It (Acts 28:25-28). And truly, many of the scattered tribes of Israel along with many Gentiles, have 'heard' The Gospel, and have believed on the same Promise Jesus Christ as given to Abraham (Gal.3). The blindness is especially upon Judah today, but recall the previous Isaiah 28 Chapter covered the deception of Ephraim, who is symbolic of the ten tribe kingdom of the 'house of Israel' among the western Christian nations.
"Well if Ephraim has received Jesus Christ as The Savior, then how are many among them blinded also?", some might ask. Our Heavenly Father took much patience and time in revealing His Salvation within this great Book of Isaiah. He likewise has done that within all of His Word; and for us He did this, in hopes that we would at least take time out of our busy schedules, and think about Him and what He has done for us by studying His Word to learn how to serve Him. Our LORD YHVH and His Son Jesus Christ deserve all praise, yet many today who receive His goodness won't even stop to recognize Him per His Word of Truth. Many of those believe, but their faith often wavers to the precepts of men (that Message is coming up later in this Isa.29 Chapter).
Instead, it seems that some believers are afraid to even open up His Word in study, fearing they'll discover a harsh conviction upon themselves that their conscience just won't be able to bear. No believer on Christ need worry about that from God's Word, for we 'all' are already convicted by 'sin' (Rom.3:9; Gal.3:22-29; all of Romans 7). Even at our very best, we are as "filthy rags" to God (Isa.64:6-9). So then who is worthy of Salvation? None; absolutely none. But our LORD loved us enough to send His Son Jesus Christ to shed His Blood upon the cross, so that those who believe might be converted (return), with their soul healed and gathered back to Him for eternity, our sins taken away and remembered no more. Believers on Christ should never be afraid of the chastisement from our Lord, for it means He loves us, and there is...hope in waiting for Him (Hebrews 12). Those afraid to open up The Word out of fear of being convicted will default to spiritual blindness. When a believer on Christ allows that to happen, it means they have a 'fear' of needed correction. That thinking will make those want to leave His Word closed so they will not have to face His Truth. What must those default to then? Spiritual 'blindness', because they refuse to open up God's Letter in discovery. We all will face The Lord Jesus Christ at one time or another (2 Cor.5). So why delay in opening up His Word now, especially in these times?
But the high minded who do not fear Him, and think they themselves are righteous, are haughty and will be humbled. The spiritual blindness is especially upon those, because they wish to set themselves up as little gods, anticipating the world looking up to them. Truly, those love the praise of men more than the praise of God. Is their time of humbling when Christ gets here a type of tough love? Yes, otherwise, there would be no need for Christ's "thousand years" reign to rule with "a rod of iron" (Rev.20; Rev.19:15). Those are who the false messiah will be especially setup for, ensuring their deception. And notice within this Isaiah 29 Chapter that God is giving us a warning that many of those haughty are rulers and prophets among His People of both 'houses' of Israel. Who then, will we believe? There is only One Who will never let us down, The Father and The Son.

Isa 29:11    And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, "Read this, I pray thee": and he saith, "I cannot; for it is sealed":
12    And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, "Read this, I pray thee": and he saith, "I am not learned".

I openly and gladly admit, that I do not know everything in The Word, for who can understand all of God's Word to Its supreme depth? God's Word is continually revealing and giving an understanding only by our Lord's spiritual touching. Who can say they are in such great personal standing with our Lord that He will just show them all Heavenly Truth from His Living Word? Even Paul learned that no man can measure up to that full knowing while in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12). By that example in 2 Corinthians 12, Paul knew the many revelations he received from our Lord required that he be humbled. Even Paul was thus admitting that his flesh could only fathom so much before being overwhelmed. But this situation mentioned here in these verses of Isaiah shows something else.
These Isaiah 29:11-12 verses reveal that when some leaders of the people are asked about a deeper Truth in God's Word, they say, "I can't tell you, for It is sealed". Did anyone ever tell you that our Lord Christ's Book of Revelation is 'sealed', even when the Greek word for 'Revelation' means 'to disclose, and lay bear'? (Strong's no. 602). Someone said to me once, "there's only a tiny amount of The Bible we need to know. Just believe, and you'll be saved." Truly, having faith on The Father through His Son is a requirement unto Salvation. But do you think that individual knows from The Word that God is sending a false messiah first? It's better to admit ignorance and get back into studying The Word, than to just say "It is sealed and nobody knows." In time, we all will know the Full Wine of Christ; maybe not while in the flesh, but we all will fully know (Jer.31:33-34, and verse 24 in this Isaiah Chapter). However, the level of knowing per The Word which these Isaiah verses are speaking of is not that difficult to discover. It simply comes from Chapter by Chapter, line by line Bible study.
Our Lord is saying all this in irony, just to show how His people can deceive themselves by putting their faith in some who haven't even cracked open His Word in study that much (yes, I've had at least one Pastor admit to me privately that his seminar study did not fully cover all of God's Word line upon line). It's the 'systems' of the false ones that 'some' of our brethren in Christ have allowed that riles me, and not believers on The Savior. If you're in a Church that does teach The Word line by line, then stay with it and support it.

Isa 29:13    Wherefore the Lord said, "Forasmuch as this people draw near Me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour Me, but have removed their heart far from Me, and their fear toward Me is taught by the precept of men:

Our Lord Jesus gave this rebuke as the teaching of the "commandments of men" in place of His Doctrine (Matt.15; Mark 7). Face it, many just do not want to hear God's Word taught Chapter by Chapter, line upon line with understanding. Many would rather come to Church to see a religious show, and leave feeling that all is right with the world! And because of the events that have occurred in the world today, some are starting to wake up, but they want to know by someone other than our Lord how to prepare. I cannot prepare anyone for the latter days; no man can. But our Lord Christ can, by getting into His Word to realize His prophecies coming to pass as written. That's how we learn our Father's Will, and then know how He wants us to do That Will.

Isa 29:14    Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this People, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid."

This "marvellous work" for the latter days is the revealing of the "strong delusion" upon those who would rather listen to the "commandments of men" instead our Lord's warning of a false one coming prior to our Lord Jesus (2 Thess.2). This is His "strange work" of Isaiah 28:21. When that "strong delusion" is finished with the 'man of sin' being finally revealed to all for who he really is (i.e. Satan trying to play God), then it'll be for many like waking up from a bad dream, suddenly becoming hungry and thirsty, spiritually. How will the five foolish virgins feel when they discover that they had listened to the "wisdom of their wise men", and it caused them to fall away to the false messiah? (Matt.25). Hence those who put their 'trust' in man, or in a Church 'building', instead of on The ROCK Jesus Christ, are in no better state than the non-believing Jews who put their trust in a rebuilt Temple and ordinances of animal sacrifices! This is also how God's woe upon "Ariel" applies for today.

Isa 29:15    Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, "Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?"
16    Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, "He made me not?" or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, "He had no understanding?"
17    Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?

Isn't it amazing how some Churches today are allowing themselves to be linked with the various religions of the world, and are accepting ideas that God once harshly punished Sodom and Gomorrah, and even old Israel for? Both 'houses' of Israel fell into false pagan idol worship and evil abominations of old (Ezekiel 6-8; Ezek.23; 1 Kings 11 forward). The evil influence has been with God's people for a long time, even as revealed through Old Testament Bible study. Is it occurring within some Churches today who have accepted Christ Jesus as their Savior? It doesn't take a whole lot of Bible study to discover from whom, and where the abominations happening today first started. Those Kenites (sons of Cain), their false servants, and their various world brotherhoods who meet in secret will eventually be cast out of God's House (Zech. 14:21; 1 Kings 9:20-21; Ezra 2; 8; 9, all concerning remnants of Canaan which eventually became Nethinim scribes and priests that crept into the "house of Judah"). Those are the "workers of iniquity" our Lord is speaking about with, "...them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark..." (Isa.29:15). Don't be deceived and think they and their hoodwinked stand-ins are not already nesting in God's House. It began as early as David's reign, and even before, when Israel failed in separating from the peoples of Canaan who were doing the abominations (Books of Joshua and Judges).
So is there plotting against those who would hold to God's Truth, from those who hold secret counsels? When our Lord Jesus comes, it shall be discovered that their "fruitful field" is as an overgrown "forest" that can't produce fruit. Then those will recognize who held to and stayed in The Word, teaching the true "fruitful field" as our LORD intended.

Isa 29:18    And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
19    The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

Is this historical? No, this event hasn't occurred yet, for these verses speak of our Lord Christ's return, and is when all the blinders upon the deceived today will be fully removed. This is after the 'change' of the "last trump" per 1 Corinthians 15:52.
This flesh is designed to naturally cause spiritual blindness, for it is a carnal nature not suitable for God's Eternal Kingdom. The "carnal" nature is "enmity against God", as Paul would say in Romans 8:7-8. Our flesh can even cause us to think that we please God by doing something we think... He will approve of, when often we truly haven't looked for proper counsel in His Word in 'testing the fruit', to discover if it would be according to His Will. That's how many traditions get started within the Church. And that's also how some others think the bringing back of the Levitical priesthood animal sacrifices will please God, when He has declared that He doesn't want it, won't accept it, but instead desires our love for Him, and to care and have love for each other (Isaiah 1:11-20).
It is that love for Him and for all peoples from His devout in Christ Jesus which caused God's Blessings to be poured out upon the western Christian nations through its history. Those devout will have much "joy in the LORD" when this event of casting the flesh away occurs at our Lord Christ's return.

Isa 29:20    For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:
21    That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought.

This "terrible one" refers to Satan and his servants who watch at every chance to do wickedness. Their working is to silence God's rebuke of their abominations and wicked ways. They think they are above all reproach, and will commit evil upon the just for nothing, looking for the opportunity to do so. To do right is not in them, as they are "spots in your feasts of charity" (Jude 1). Is it any wonder that the world hates anyone who makes a 'stand' for The LORD, seeking to do what is right, and rebuking those who willingly lead the poor and weak to sin? This world was given for Satan to rule over, until our Lord Jesus returns (Luke 4 with Satan's tempting of our Lord). Yet many believers today have bought into the forms of 'humanist' thought that declares we can make this world a better place, and have world peace, if we try hard enough. That false idea is part of the deceptive dream just covered back at verses 7 and 8. True peace can only happen with our Lord Jesus Christ in reign upon this earth (Isa.9). And that will not occur until this "terrible one" and his servants are "cut off". Therefore, these verses are definitely of the time after our Lord Jesus has returned.

Isa 29:22    Therefore thus saith the LORD, Who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, "Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale.
23    But when he seeth his children, the work of Mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify My name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel.

The "house of Jacob" here is put for all twelve tribes of Israel with Gentile believers who stay on Christ Jesus. That means God's True Heavenly Israel, i.e. a spiritual Israel not of the flesh, but of Christ's Heavenly inheritance. When the 'veil' of this flesh age is torn away at Christ's coming, and thereby ending this age of flesh, then all knees will bow to Christ our KING (Isa.45:23; Rom.14:11; Phill.2:9-11). Some will be "ashamed" at Christ's appearance. Such is the role of the five foolish virgins of Matthew 25 which didn't prepare with a spare vessel of the Oil of God's Truth in their spiritual lamps (metaphor for the mind). But these of Jacob will not be ashamed, as written, for they are the work of God's hands, as they stayed in His Word line by line, instead of allowing the teaching of God's Word to become a carnival side show.

Isa 29:24     They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine."

Those who erred in spiritual matters during this flesh time will come to know God's Truth at that future time. And those who "murmured" (rebellious, backbiters; Strong's 7279) against Christ and His, "shall learn doctrine" of God's Word. And that's a big emphasis on the word "shall", for our Lord Jesus and His saints will rule with "a rod of iron" when Christ Jesus returns (Ps.2; Rev.2:25-29; Rev.12:5; Rev.19:11-16).
These verses are yet more Biblical proof that the "thousand years" reign of our Lord Jesus per Revelation 20 is a literal period of time, and that all the wicked are not going to be destroyed at His return as many are taught (recall Acts 24:15). There is going to be real discipline when our Lord Jesus gets here, and that's why God's Word speaks of that "rod of iron".

The next study in Isaiah 30 will continue our Lord's Message of times of trial and tribulation upon His people for not following Him. More will be covered line upon line to reveal that this great Book of Isaiah also applies to these latter day times, and how to prepare for our Lord Christ's return.

Peace to you in Christ Jesus,
Dave Ramey
